Experience The Divine Essence Of Darshan

Shammi Paranjape
Once a large crowd collected at a big city venue for darshan of a Divine Master. The place was packed to capacity with eager devotees, including the rich and the famous. A chauffeur became curious about the person who his employer was so keen to see. Standing at a distance, he managed to get a fleeting glimpse of the ‘holy man’. He thought that had he got closer he could have unburdened his problems and got blessings. However, that was not to be. A strange thing happened after that. His life took an inexplicable turn for the better and his situation improved dramatically. Some years passed and he got a chance to travel to the ashram of the same holy personage whose brief darshan he once had. From amongst the thousands seated for darshan he was picked for an audience by this Divine Master. Face to face with him he was nonplussed when the divine personage said to him: “We have met once before, when you ferried your employer for darshan. Your plea from the heart reached me.” The story exemplifies the power of darshan — the sight or vision of a holy being, experienced with sincerity. ‘Darshan’ is different from ‘mere seeing’, as it is imbued with a sacred attitude of reverence and faith. So it has spiritual consequences. Devotees testify to experiencing a sense of ineffable peace in the act of darshan of a holy being as also to a sense of being spiritually rejuvenated. Holy personages are store houses of divine energy and just being in their presence nourishes the soul. Kirlian photography which captures the auras of human beings has recorded that the aura of light around divine masters is significantly different; it extends far beyond the normal range and is layered with incredible hues of gold and pink, signifying divine compassion and love. Anybody in the proximity of such beings is touched and enveloped by the aura. When adharma is rampant and moral structures are crumbling divine masters restore the faith and spread the light. Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita underlined the importance of the presence of these holy souls on earth whose ordained task it is to help humanity. Saints and holy men like Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Paramhamsa Yogananda, Meher Baba and Ramana Maharishi all helped to raise the spiritual quotient of humanity. Just being in their presence and having their darshan became an edifying experience for followers. Ramana Maharishi would sit in perfect silence in God-communion and devotees would have darshan in silent retreat. In this simple act, everything of real value was gained. In darshan, when a divine master glances at us, he’s viewing our stainless parts and bestowing the grace needed to make it more manifest in our lives. Darshan in its purest essence, however, is the vision of the Lord Himself. In most religious traditions, this darshan or blessed vision remains the central motif of devotion where the inner eye is opened and dependence on external darshan is shed. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says: “Outer darshan is essentially insufficient and transitory... but God is omnipresent. The limitations of the body and the outer senses do not hold for the inner vision. Therein you can see Him at any time and any place and receive Darshan.” Truly, once God’s invisible beauty is revealed through the Self in this manner, one is utterly charmed and is impelled to turn inward. The vision confers everything including deep satisfaction and bliss.

India Can Show the Way!

extract of the interview of H.H. Sri Sri Ravishankar, from Hindustan Times 12 Nov 2008

One of the most ancient of the 200-odd civilizations that history has known, the Indian civilization has survived mainly because of its spiritual lineage. Spirituality offers a universal value system that binds the people together and nurtures the scientific thought process. There is a marked difference between Oriental and Occidental spirituality. In the Occidental way of thinking, belief comes first and then experience follows. The Oriental philosophy and science have the same parameter: they both say experience first and the believe. That is why there has never been a conflict between science and spirituality in this part of the world. Unlike in the West, not event a single scientist was prosecuted.
Spirituality begins with Tatva Gyan. The journey starts with 'idam', which means knowing this and moves on to 'aham, which means knowing the subjective Self. Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and Einstein's Theory of Relativity were all common thoughts in the philosophical schools in India 5000 years ago. This heritage with such richness though limited to a few like science, has impacted society at large. A country with diverse religious beliefs, languages, food habits and cultures and huge population has been held together by common thread - Spirituality.

Mahtama Gandhi knew that India's breath is Spirituality and he made use of that to unite the country. He used to do 'Satsangs' twice a day. It was through spirituality that he united people across India into a huge movement. He was deeply spiritual person himself.
Politicians of today have not just moved far away from spirituality they have rather become allergic to spirituality. Perhaps, that is the reason why they have lost the respect of society and corruption has crept into our society like never before. However , with a large number of youngsters waking up to this fact and imbibing spiritual values again, a revival seems round the corner.
Taking part in spiritual congregation has given youngsters new home their life as well as hope in the future of the nation. They have started dreaming of violence-free, corruption-free society.
Commitment of bringing justice in society, devoid of spiritual values, has cost the nation heavily. Take for example the youths who have turned to the Naxalite movement. They are not having a party in the forests; they are putting their life at risk. They are dedicated to their own notion of freedom. Maoists and insurgents have a dream of their own for a corruption free country but the means they adopt are violent. These youths have commitment, but they lack Spirituality. They have the best interests of the country at heart but a lack of spirituality in their approach has brought so much pain and suffering to themselves and others.
We have to make clear distinctions between religion and spirituality. Religion divides people, Spirituality unites. While religion is made up of concepts, Spirituality is practical and is life-transforming.It is spirituality than can evoke compassion and inspire people to take initiatives for a common cause. It can bring corporate social responsibility.
In the comings years, India can really show to the world how to build violence free society, a society with more understanding and patience, with unity in diversity and of happy people.
The state needs to have a more human face. It cannot divide people on religious grounds, whether minority or majority. Their economy and social backwardness should be the only criteria for uplifting people and not religion as is happening now in several places.
We need to promote multi-cultural, multi-religious education more vigorously. Be in Kashmir or Kerala, Assam or Maharashtra, all citizens of India should have equal rights. Gender equality has to be promoted. We need leaders, who don't think about short term gains, but rather strive for nation's development tirelessly. To infuse new blood into our polity, there should be certain retirement age for politicians. However, after retirement they should continue to guide the younger generation of politicians.

Self-reliance should be our priority at the village level. Think globally and act locally should be our policy. Our youth should become entrepreneurs and explore opportunities throughout the world. I see India as world's center for Spirituality because it has the capability to guide humanity out of the problems that the world is facing today. It is already guiding the world in lifestyle changes for healthy and a better society through its ancient wisdom of Yoga, Meditation and Ayurveda.
The time has come for India to reclaim her rightful place on the world stage. In order for this to occur, we need to become more confident and take pride in our culture and spiritual roots.
The spiritual wisdom, which was her glory in the past, has been almost forgotten and needs to be revived.
H.H. Sri Sri Ravishankar,
Founder of Art of Living.

Sterling Performance For Your Eyes Only

E-mail forward
Bob Richards, the former pole-vault champion, shares a moving story about a skinny young boy who loved football. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever got to play. The determined young man decided to hang in there... who knows, perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice nor game but remained a bench-warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walkon”. Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him on the roster because he always puts his heart and soul to every practice, and at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit and hustle they badly needed. The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. The persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game. It was the end of his senior football season, and as he trotted onto the practice field shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if i miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.” Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was 10 points behind,a young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon. “Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. There was no way the coach wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. “All right,” he said. “You can go in.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before was doing everything right. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders. Such cheering you never heard. Finally, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach came to him and said, “Kid, i can’t believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?” He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?” The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and i wanted to show him i could do it!” Like the athlete’s father, God is always there cheering for us. He’s always reminding us to go on. He’s even offering us His hand for He knows what is best, and is willing to give us what we need and not simply what we want. God has never missed a single game. What a joy to know that life is meaningful if lived for the Highest. Live for Him for He’s watching us in the game of life.

Experience shared by Kannan
Well it was a mind blowing experience !! with lots of fun, knowledge sharing ,new friends which we can carry throughout our life..I Bow to Pareshjii who sacrificed his life towards his profession.. wish he will be happy to encourage in involving us in various Wildlife conservation awareness activities which he is doing beyond his profession.. where we will be enlighten by his thoughts and path..
I will be putting my whole experience soon, however this is just a summary.
Its not only the nature camp, its much more than that. The knowledge shared by Paresh Sir, Raman and very nice slide shows, movies added different flavor to camp. Through this camp we became aware about various aspects on nature. We were taught how to see and observer things in Nature. The Eco-friendly huts, food, overall all facilities were excellent. Moment you enter the camp site it feels very relaxing. It was pleasure & fortune to meet dynamic person like RFO (Range Forest Officer) Mr. Paresh Porab Sir.
At the end of the camp you feel very rejuvenating and feels like coming back to home. We are very grateful to Pugmark Art Gallery, Paoresh Sir for this mind blowing experience.
I will be uploading my photos soon along with article :)
